Plum Island MA Real Estate
A nine-mile long barrier island off the northeast coast of Massachusetts, Plum Island is actually part of four different communities, Ipswich, Rowley, Newbury, and Newburyport. The main residential area is mostly in Newbury and Newburyport, where beachfront homes are prized for their front row seat to the Atlantic Ocean. The residential area is densely settled with both year-round and seasonal homes. The architecture is an eclectic mix of beach cottages, comfortable saltboxes, standard residential homes, and spectacular oceanfront houses. Every home is within an easy walk to the beach and the Parker River Wildlife Sanctuary protects the delicate natural beauty of the island. Nature lovers and bird watchers flock to the Plum Island for the tidal marshes with a continually changing population of birds ranging from plovers, and killdeer to egrets, great blue herons, and occasionally snowy owls.
The Plum Island Lighthouse, a local landmark open to the public during the summer, is owned by the City of Newburyport and cared for by The Friends of Plum Island Light.
Conveniently, Plum Island is more than an oceanfront paradise, it is connected to the mainland by a bridge, making it easily reachable by car and just minutes from downtown Newburyport, major highways, shopping and medical care. There is quick access to Routes 95 and 495. The Route 128 business and financial centers and Boston are less than an hour away. There is a commuter park-and-ride nearby in Newburyport.
